Mawlamyaing – Gate to the south

The city of Mawlamyaing is known as the gate to the deep south of Myanmar. But it is still not easy to continue the trip more south from here to the beautiful islands of the Myeik archipelago. So not many tourist make a move down south to Mawlamyaing. The main attraction is the Kyaik Thanlan pagoda on a hill. As the city is located east of a river, the pagoda is a perfect spot to watch the sunset from here over the river.

Like everywhere in Myanmar we met some friendly people who didn´t mind taking a picture of them. Like this lady and the two girls in the windows of their home.

Biggest reclining Buddha of the world

Located about half an hour south of Mawlamyaing you can find one of the main attractions of this region – the biggest reclining Buddha of the world. The 180 meter long Buddha is especially for local people one of the great sights in Myanmar.
